The Baby Boomers Generation
The baby boomers generation is among the largest in history. From 1946 to 1964, over three million babies a year were born to Americans. The current number of baby boomer is estimated at around 77 million individuals. Their ages range now from the mid 40's to the mid 60's. This means that some boomers are now in midlife and others are getting into or have already entered retirement.
It's good to look at the baby boomers generation in the perspective of history. Keep in mind that the Great Depression was in full strength just before the outbreak of The second world war. Jobs were infrequent and income was very low. Many families delayed or eschewed childbearing only since they could not afford it. Birth rates remained very low during the War since lots of men were called into military. It took a couple of years after the end of the War for it to become sure that the economy was thriving and for families to be prepared to take the leap of having kids.
A thriving economy continued throughout most of the 60's and birth rates didn't begin to drop until 1965. The War had changed the nature of US families as well. Females went to work outside the house in droves to replace the manpower lost to the armed forces, and some continued to work after the War ended. Returning service people took advantage of the the GI Bill to go to school and the VHA to purchase homes. Baby boomers were more likely to have higher educated parents, working mothers, and to live in house owning households.
While the baby boomers generation was growing up, the entire US culture went through numerous changes. Most of them were too young to remember much about the Korean War, but some did experience the Cold War and the escalation of nuclear weapons. Some recall significant historical events clearly, like the Cuban Missile Crisis when the country seemed on the edge of war with the USSR. Many recall the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Some remember most clearly events like Watergate, the resignation of President Nixon and the draft related to the Vietnam War.
The baby boomers generation has left a wide and deep footprint on American history. They seen the Human rights Movement and the Women's Rights Movement. The Vietnam War and all its suffering and damage were not distant, but seen every day in almost every home on television. Both former President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama are basically members of the baby boomers generation, the former born at the start of the era and the latter at its end.
