Apple MacBook Pro Winter 2011 Notebook Review
Apple introduced the MacBook Pro as being the successor to the PowerBook G4 back in early 2006. Designed for professionals on the go, Apple continued to refine their family of high-performance laptops every year.
Several of the new updates introduced design changes but this year is the year of the Apple MacBook Pro Winter 2011 laptop computer and while the look still looks just like last year, Apple made many unique features that are more than welcome particularly if you have not upgraded your MacBook Pro for the past couple of years.
The Pros
The Apple MacBook Pro Winter 2011 notebook joins the Sandy Bridge bandwagon as all of its models include Intel second generation Core i5 and Core i7 processors. The actual Intel Core i5 2620M is the new engine beneath the hood of the 13-inch MacBook Pro. But, the larger styles, at 15" and 17", now run on quad-core processors, which can power even the most strenuous video and graphics editing applications effortlessly. 4 GB continues to be the starting memory, yet 12 more GBs can be added. Improvements were made in the graphics end to boot with the two larger styles sporting a fast AMD Radeon HD 6490M for respectable gaming. For the most demanding users, the Radeon HD 6750M can be put in as an alternative. Do not worry about losing out on battery life, since the Intel HD Graphics 3000 works very efficiently. The new MacBook Pros virtually scream in just about every speed test.
Yet another fresh technology has been launched in the brand new large monitor hook-up or Display Port. Intel's brand new Thunderbolt technology delivers much more versatility in how the port functions. Finally transfer speeds, that have increased by as much as 1200%, will stop being the bottleneck that has slowed down file transfers to high capacity storage drives. Thunderbolt contains the additional advantage of supporting several devices in a daisy chain while maintaining optimal performance.
The new MacBook Pros also come with an all new style of built in webcam, the FaceTime HD camera. This allows video phone calls to be made with those supported devices in decent 720p quality.
Disappointments
Just one major element that hasn't been upgraded however, is the battery, which means it's going to now last a shorter time between charges. Don't be too concerned though, since it still lasts a respectable seven hours with wireless turned on. Another problem for 13-inch purchasers, will be the slight drop in graphics performance as a result of the lack of an AMD or NVDIA counterpart to the Intel integrated graphics. Only gamers need to be concerned though, since the Intel HD 3000 graphics is a great improvement over its predecessors.
The Verdict
The benchmarks for the high-end laptop category have been drastically improved with the unveiling of the MacBook Pro Winter 2011 models. Brand new MacBook Pro purchasers can be assured that they will be able to run the most demanding software for the near future.
